Forests in the Orne cover almost 89,000 hectares, representing 14.5 % of the département’s area and alone accounting for 25% of the country’s woodland. They contain main different species including oaks, beech and fir trees.

Pin-au-Haras forest
Pin-au-Haras forest
This forest was owned by the king or the duchess of Vendôme. It became home to the national stud farm in 1715, when part of the wood was sold for building materials. After the Revolution, this forest was taken over by the Water and Forests Department when its area was reduced by two thirds.
How to get there: follow the signs for Paris until you reach Pin-au-Haras (about 15 km from Argentan)
Petite and Grande Gouffern forests
These woods are the remains of a huge forest which used to stretch between Falaise and Almenèches. Current Government policy is to plant deciduous trees which will gradually replace the conifers.
